Varistors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), are electronic components used to protect sensitive devices and circuits from voltage surges and transient over voltages.
Varistors exhibit a non-linear resistance that decreases as the voltage across them increases. When a voltage spike occurs, varistors effectively absorb the excess energy and divert it away from the protected circuit, thereby limiting the voltage to a safe level. Varistors are commonly used in power supplies, surge protectors, electronic equipment, and telecommunications systems to safeguard against damage caused by voltage fluctuations and lightning strikes.
